There is certainly no shortage of variety on this Christmas set. The 13 Yuletide-oriented numbers feature two previously released numbers apiece by the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir and pianist Oliver Jones. Otherwise, the music was being released for the first time in this 1998 CD. Heard from are bluesman Bryan Lee ("Santa Claus Is Messin' With the Kid"), Diana Krall (an unaccompanied vocal and piano solo on "Jingle Bells"), an odd duet by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and pianist Paul Bley on "Christmas Song," bassist Dave Young with the Phil Dwyer Quartet ("Winter Wonderland"), Ranee Lee ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"), Paul Bley's trio ("Silent Night"), Dave Young's trio ("It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"), Jeri Brown ("White Christmas") and the group, Quartango ("O Holy Night"). The numbers by the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir are quite straight and out-of-place. Otherwise, this set should certainly interest collectors of Christmas jazz.
